De Italiaanse podcastmaker Jonathan Zenti (o.a. Meat/The Heart, Radiotopia) trapt de Makersdag af met een prikkelend betoog. Hartstikke leuk dat podcast nu hip, happening en soms zelfs commercieel succesvol is, maar wat betekent dat voor audiodrama of documentaire podcastseries? Waar staan we nu in podcastland? En waar gaan we heen?

10.00 – 11.15 uur Strijbos & Van Rijswijk - Sound design In één uur neemt Rob van Rijswijk je mee van de wetten voor filmmuziek, via foley naar een muzikaal klankdecor voor audio-projecten. Het duo Strijbos & Van Rijswijk heeft wereldwijd furore gemaakt met kunstprojecten waarin muziek, audio en theater samenkomen. Zoals de geluidswandeling Walk With Me (o.a. Oerol) en Signal-on sea. Maar ze zijn begonnen met filmmuziek (o.a. Jezus is een Palestijn), hoorspelen en het maken van eigen composities voor kunstprojecten.

11.30-12.30 uur Nicole Terborg en Eefje Blankevoort - Van persoonlijk verhaal tot journalistieke podcastserie
Nicole Terborg was 13 when she left Brabant and was sent to live with an aunt in Amsterdam for the rest of her schooling; not an extraordinary event in the Afro-Surinamese community. More than 30 years later Nicole found herself full of questions, and she returned to Suriname for the first time in 22 years. In her podcast series Kweekje 'mi kwekipikin' (Prospektor/VPRO) she searches for answers to those questions - examining not just why she had to leave, but also her own Eurocentric views on families and child-rearing. What kind of maker is she, as an Afro-Dutch woman in an overwhelmingly white journalistic world? Together with creative producer Eefje Blankenvoort (De Plantage van onze voorouders, Shadow Game) she explains how she turned an intimate personal history into a layered, journalistic podcast series.

16.30 - 18.00 uur  Josh Baker - Van Scène tot verhaal
De Britse Josh Baker is een prijswinnende multimediale duizendpoot die het gevaar niet schuwt voor een goede scène. In het tweede seizoen van zijn gelauwerde podcastserie I'M NOT A MONSTER (BBC) dat begin 2023 verscheen, onderzoekt Baker wat er écht is gebeurd met Shamima Begum, een 15-jarige die in 2015 naar Syrië vertrok om zich aan te sluiten bij IS. Behalve een even verslavende als diepgravende podcastserie werd dit ook een filmdocumentaire. Daarnaast schrijft Baker artikelen voor The Times en The Guardian en maakte hij filmdocumentaires (meerdere werden genomineerd voor een Emmy Award) Ook schrijft hij momenteel een script voor een Hollywood-speelfilm. In zijn Masterclass vertelt Josh Baker specifiek over het maken van zijn podcastserie. Wat is de rol van schrijven en een 'filmblik' daarbij? Hoe neem je een goede scène op? En hoe krijg je mensen die aanvankelijk niet willen meewerken, van sekswerkers tot leden van een terroristische organisatie, zo ver om zich toch te laten interviewen? Last but not least: hoe zorg je vervolgens voor enorme impact van jouw productie?

The Italian podcast maker Jonathan Zenti (e.g. Meat/The Heart, Radiotopia) will kick off the Makers’ Day with a provocative question. It’s great, of course, that podcasts are now hip and happening, but what does that mean for audio drama and documentary podcast series makers? Where do we stand in podcast land? And where are we going?

10.00 – 11.15 Strijbos & Van Rijswijk - Sound design
In the course of an hour Rob van Rijswijk will take you from the laws of film music, via Foley, to a musical sound decor for audio projects. As a duo Strijbos &Van Rijswijk have had global success with art projects bringing together music, audio and theatre, such as the soundwalk Walk With Me (including at Oerol) and Signal-on-sea. However, they started out making film music (e.g. Jezus is een Palestijn), radio plays, and their own compositions for art projects.

11.30-12.30 Nicole Terborg en Eefje Blankevoort - Van persoonlijk verhaal tot journalistieke podcastserie
In her podcast series Kweekje(due this autumn, Prospektor/VPRO) Nicole Terborg examines a turning point in her youth, when as a teenager she was sent to live with an aunt in the Netherlands for the rest of her schooling. This is a pretty normal event in the Afro-Surinam community – but why, and what are the consequences? Together with creative producer Eefje Blankenvoort (De Plantage van onze voorouders, Shadow Game) she explains how she turned an intimate personal history into a layered, journalistic podcast series.

After lunch, which is a great opportunity to do some networking, you can choose – together with the participants of other tracks – between a masterclass in voiceover by Lucas de Rycke (e.g. De kunst van het verdwijnen), a workshop on money by the producer Randy Vermeulen, pitch sessions given by funders, broadcasters and podcast producers, or presentations by inspiring Dutch and foreign makers about their newest projects. And if you’re still looking for a composer for your own newest plan, book a speed date with one of the musicians present!

16.30 - 18.00 Josh Baker -  How to make a scene 
Josh Baker is a prizewinning British multimedia all-rounder who will face  danger to get a good scene. In the second season of his much-lauded podcast series I'm not a monster (BBC), first broadcast in early 2023, Baker examines what really happened to Shamima Begum, the 15-year-old girl who left for Syria in 2015 to join ISIS. This addictive, in-depth podcast series has now also been made into a film documentary. Baker also writes articles for The Times and The Guardian and creates film documentaries, several of which have been nominated for Emmy awards. He is currently writing a script for a Hollywood feature film. In his Masterclass Baker will talk specifically about making his podcast series. What is the role of writing and a 'filmic' eye? How do you record a good scene? How do persuade people who are initially unwilling to cooperate - from sex workers to members of a terrorist organisation - to allow themselves to be interviewed? And last but not least: how do you then make sure your production has a huge impact?
